Antique batik tulis from Java. Using a fine copper tool called a canting, the artist draws the design on both front and back in melted wax. Subsequent dye baths and hot water washes to remove the wax create the designs, each of which is particular to the artist. Motifs drawn from nature like this stylized floral are common to central Java. Great skill was used to create the delicate cross-hatch design in the ground.
