Aviary Velvet

Devore', which literally means to devour in French, is a technique originally developed in 17th century France as a way to create lace-like effects at low cost. Caustic material would be applied to a silk and viscose or rayon blend velvet, the one fiber disolved away leaving only the silk behind. This is a piece from the 1920's, applied by hand to a rayon panne velvet.
