Ajrakh

This cloth called “ajrakh” is only produced in a few isolated locations in Western India and Eastern Pakistan. Artisans in Sindh, Pakistan made this true two-sided example. The process for printing is sequential and complex, requiring specialized knowledge in preparing the cotton cloth, creating perfect symmetry in the block printing, front and back and finishing the piece. Indigo and madder red are common colorations, representing earth and sky. This washed brown hue is very unusual.

The ajrakh is an integral part of Sindhi culture and Sindhi nationalism, often presented as gifts of hospitality to guests and presented to the person who is held in highest regard. Backed and welted in an undyed cotton/linen blend.
