Antique batik tulis from Surakarta, central Java. Using a fine copper tool called a canting, the artist draws the design on both front and back in melted wax. Subsequent dye baths and hot water washes to remove the wax create the designs, each of which is particular to the artist. Motifs drawn from nature like these seahorses and starfish are common to central Java. Finished with indigo Belgian linen welt.
