Gordes Border

A pretty antique border print from a French estate covers the front and back of this pillow. From our research, it looks like it very well may have been block printed in the early 1800's. Florals at that time in France tended to be depictions of local varieties - roses, tulips , daisies etc. - rather than the exotic examples in Indian chintzes. Backgrounds became darker to show less wear and floral handkerchiefs were especially desirable as they were worn by women as small scarves crossed over the top of plain empire-style dresses. A one-of-a-kind, very special piece of textile history.
